MAD's 'Courtyard Kindergarten' has been named ‘one of most anticipated projects in 2019’ by @bloomberg. Why It's Exciting: "@ma_yansong_mad is famous for his large-scale cultural and luxury projects. (Among other things, he's the architect George Lucas chose for his massive new museum in Los Angeles.) So this kindergarten—while admittedly expansive in scale—is something of a departure for him. The combination of new construction and historic preservation, moreover, is a nice reminder that "starchitecture" doesn't have to be disruptive." Rounding out MAD Architects’ Year-In-Review is our model for the “home of the future” which was presented on the occasion of the 2018 China House Exhibition in Beijing. “Living Garden” defies notions of the traditional home, where walls and roofs form boundaries by envisioning an “en-plein-air” atmosphere. A curved, floating roof slopes downwards. Its grid-like structure is layered with translucent, waterproof glass that while protecting the ‘interior’ from the rain, also provides natural ventilation, and allows sunlight to flood inside. Hanergy solar panels are strategically placed above. The angle of each is such that it harnesses maximum amounts of sunlight to provide power throughout the home. Collectively, they generate enough electric energy to power the daily consumption of a family of three. Maintaining an openness towards the sky and its surroundings, “Living Garden” sees life, (solar) energy, and nature coincide, seamlessly blending together to create an architectural ‘living’ landscape – one that emphasizes humanity’s emotional connection with nature. .

MAD Architects’ Year-In-Review:
In 2018, we realized several large-scale installations in China, Italy, and Japan. We completed the restoration of the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel in Japan’s Niigata prefecture. The revitalization project sees the installation of several permanent artistic spaces along the historic lookout tunnel, with the intention of bringing back the cultural energy that once empowered the region. The “Tunnel of Light” opened on the occasion of the 2018 Echigo-Tsumari Triennale.

MAD Architects’ Year-In-Review:
In 2018, we realized several large-scale installations in China, Italy, and Japan. “Fifth Ring” was presented on the occasion of Milan Design Week in April. The immersive work created a new dimension inside the courtyard of Milan’s historic Seminario Arcivescovile – a seminary built in 1564 for St. Carlo Borromeo. The presence of the circular ring inside the square of the courtyard’s four walls stood as a symbol of mankind’s continued search for perfection, while also defining a new dimension for the traditional courtyard space.

MAD Architects’ Year-In-Review:
This year, MAD was selected as the only firm from Asia by Beulah International, competing alongside BIG, Coop Himmelb(l)au, MVRDV, OMA, and UNStudio, to conceive a mixed-use program of more than 220,000sqm for the heart of Melbourne. Defying the typical glass, box-like buildings that appear detached from the city’s historic parks and natural local terrain, MAD’s organic design introduces a silhouette of natural forms – mountain, tree, cloud – into the dense urban center, offering a distinct and iconic scheme for the skyline that reconnects citizens with nature.

MAD Architects’ Year-In-Review:
In 2018, were commissioned by the Droom en Daad Foundation to design an observation deck atop the historic Fenix warehouse in Rotterdam. The project signifies the first public building in Europe to be realized by a Chinese firm, and introduces a new type of architectural endeavor for Rotterdam; and reconnect inhabitants with the port and city beyond.
